Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola Tunnel Opens Soon with New Toll System

Nepal will achieve a historic milestone in its transportation sector as authorities prepare to open the Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola Tunnel with a new toll system. The government constructed this 2.8-kilometer underground tunnel, the first of its kind in the country, with an investment of Rs 22 billion to provide faster and safer access to Kathmandu Valley.

Toll Rates Announced for Different Vehicles

The Government of Nepal, following recommendations from the Roads Board Nepal via the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, has finalized toll rates for the tunnel:

Cars and Vans: Rs 65 entering Kathmandu, Rs 60 exiting

Buses and Trucks: Rs 260 entering, Rs 200 exiting

The inbound toll is slightly higher for buses and trucks because it saves time and fuel on the uphill journey, while the outbound toll is lower due to the downhill drive.

Motorcycles Prohibited for Safety in Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola Tunnel

The authorities have banned motorcycles from tunnel to ensure safety and maintain smooth traffic flow. According to Saujanya Nepal, the project director, this measure reduces risks in the enclosed underground passageway.

Trial Run Scheduled in October 2025

Authorities have planned a trial run in October 2025 to ensure the tunnel operates efficiently before full public access. This trial will help test traffic management, safety protocols, and the toll collection system.

Benefits of the Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola Tunnel

Once operational, the tunnel is expected to not only reduce travel time between Nagdhunga and Sisnekhola but also improve road safety for commuters and commercial vehicles. Furthermore, it will help ease traffic congestion in Kathmandu Valley and provide a modern, efficient transportation alternative.

A Milestone in Nepal’s Infrastructure

The Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola Tunnel represents a new chapter in Nepal’s road infrastructure, combining modern engineering, convenience, and safety. This project will transform how vehicles enter and exit Kathmandu. It will provide commuters and transporters with a faster and more reliable route, improving travel efficiency and overall convenience.
